State Goods is the art practice of Joel Gregorio, a Toronto-based artist, creative director, and founder of Sovereign State, the independent brand studio he has led for over sixteen years.
At the heart of Gregorio’s work is a fascination with unlikely elements living together. That instinct began early. As a child, he would take apart toys until what remained was a small pile of disparate pieces with no obvious use or playable function. Around the same time, he became mesmerised by the logic of Rube Goldberg machines, watching ordinary objects linked through a sequence of unexpected interactions, each one activating the next until something finally arrived where it was meant to go. He began building his own versions from broken toy parts, creating connected ecosystems of discarded pieces that could carry a ball across a room to a final destination. That way of thinking remains the bedrock of his practice.
Today, State Goods extends that same instinct into a more refined visual language. Through collage, layering, juxtaposition, and composition, Gregorio gathers unrelated forms into works that feel both visibly constructed and emotionally whole. Botanical forms, found imagery, figures, symbols, textures, and gestures are brought into conversation, creating images that hold memory, atmosphere, longing, instinct, and inner life all at once. The juxtaposition is often obvious, but the final expression aims for something cohesive, immersive, and complete.
Underlying this way of making is a deeper inheritance of resourcefulness. Growing up Filipino, Gregorio was surrounded by a creative sensibility that treated resourcefulness not simply as practicality, but as imagination under pressure. He watched his father repair, build, and improvise with unconventional materials, turning the ordinary into something useful, inventive, and alive. Cardboard boxes became shields and swords when buying toys was not an option. What could have been read as limitation felt, instead, like magic. It made his father a maker of worlds. That lesson stayed with him. In both life and work, Gregorio continues to look for latent potential in the ordinary, taking materials, images, or forms with one understood purpose and reconfiguring them into something newly felt and newly valuable.
This sensibility also carries through his broader creative life. As founder and creative director of Sovereign State, Gregorio has spent more than sixteen years shaping brand worlds, visual identities, and cultural expressions for clients across hospitality, lifestyle, and business. State Goods is not separate from that discipline, but a more personal extension of it. It is where design rigour gives way to instinct, where composition becomes more emotional, and where image-making becomes a way of holding complexity rather than resolving it.
Some works are produced as one-off originals. Others are released as limited editions. Across both, the intention remains the same: to create pieces that hold presence, mood, and meaning in visual form. Material choices are treated as an extension of the work itself. Paper, finish, scale, texture, framing, and light are considered carefully so that each piece carries not only an image, but a physical and lasting sense of presence.
State Goods sits in the space between fine art, collage, design sensibility, and storytelling. It is a practice built on assembly, intuition, contrast, and care. More than anything, it is an ongoing effort to bring disparate things into relation and, in doing so, create work that feels vivid, resonant, and whole.
In Space
State Goods offers select works and commissions for interiors, hospitality settings, and other considered environments.
Whether singular pieces or small groups of works, each placement is approached with attention to scale, mood, and the character of the space itself. The aim is not simply to fill a wall, but to bring something lasting, distinct, and quietly resonant into the environment.
Projects may include private residences, hotels, restaurants, cultural spaces, and collaborative settings where artwork plays a role in shaping atmosphere and identity.
